“Studying at the Paris Observatory is an important step toward building my career in space physics.”

  • Where did you study in France? How long did you stay there and in which context ? Which field did you study there?

I am currently studying in France at the Observatoire de Paris. I am enrolled in the two-year Masters program in Space Science and Technology at Université PSL, specialising in space physics.

  • Why did you choose to study in France?

I chose to study in France because the Paris Observatory and Université PSL offer a masters program designed for international students and oriented towards research. It matches my goal of pursuing a career in space physics and allows me to work with the researchers at the Observatoire.

  • What was your first reaction when you arrived in France?

I was impressed by the beauty of Paris. At the same time, I felt a bit overwhelmed, especially by the language - my French was not fluent at that time, and it is still not fluent today, but I am improving steadily.

  • Did you speak French before coming to France?

Since I did not take French classes in high school I decided to learn some French by taking courses at the Charles University and at the French Institute in Prague. Before coming to France, I had an A2 level in French.

  • How did you finance your mobility to France?

My masters studies are financed by the France Excellence Europa scholarship, for which I am very grateful. Additionally, the curriculum of my Master includes a research internship which is funded by CNRS.

  • What have you gained from studying in France? From an academic, a professional and a personal point of view?

The master’s program has introduced me to new fields of space physics, broadening my perspective.  I have also been able to engage in meaningful research as a part of my studies and personally, this experience has helped me develop greater independence by living abroad.

  • According to you, what is the most important advantage and the most important drawback of the city where you studied in France?

I currently live in Meudon, near the Paris Observatory campus. Living close to the campus and having quick access to Paris is a major advantage. The quieter atmosphere compared to central Paris suits me well.

  • What is your best memory of this experience?

My best memories so far are from the nighttime observations of stars, planets, and nebulae, which were a part of the astronomy course I took. We used optical telescopes along with CCD cameras and spectrometers to perform observations and later analysed them.

  • What advice would you give to future Czech students in France?

Administrative procedures can be lengthy, so its good to approach them with patience and realistic expectations. Writing emails in French is a highly valuable skill.
